TEDxUniversityofLuxembourg: ‘How to design a truly sustainable food system in the context of climate change?’

12th-16th October 2020

Dr. Rachel Reckinger spoke at TEDxUniversityofLuxembourg 2020. The event was held online over five days and addressed questions around the topic of climate change. Dr. Reckinger’s lecture was on from 18:30-20:00, on Thursday, 15th October and included a live exchange of Q&A with the audience. Her lecture discussed ‘How to design a truly sustainable food system in the context of climate change’?.

Dr. Reckinger argued that moments of crisis, like the current pandemic, stress-test the resilience of social, economic, cultural and political institutions of society. In such times of upheaval, individual and collective food supply become primary concerns, allowing us to ask how resilient Luxembourg’s food system is when international supply chains are disrupted. Which vulnerabilities transpire, even in the wealthiest of food-secure countries, where in normal times there is enough food supply for the country’s inhabitants? The problems outlined by the current pandemic can be seen as a prefiguration of a potential ecological crisis to come in relation to climate change and biodiversity loss, and it is in this context that Dr. Reckinger argued that only a holistic focus on food systems and their sovereignty struggles leads to truly sustainable food transitions for communities, to curb the effects of climate change. Her talk drew on the newly developed infographics created by the Sustainable Food Practices team in order to show transitions in thinking from a linear food supply chain analysis, to a holistic encompassing food system approach.
